Back / Lazy Days Bronze
Background
While we often think of polar bears as the powerful, wandering kings of the Arctic, even the most formidable hunters need a "recharge" day. Lazy Days of a Polar Bear captures a moment of pure, unadulterated relaxation. With its hindquarters still perched high and its chin resting comfortably against the ground, this bear has clearly decided that whatever was on the agenda can wait until tomorrow.
The sculpture is cast in bronze, a medium that lends a timeless, weighty quality to the bear's slumped form. To achieve this level of detail - from the subtle musculature of the haunches to the heavy eyelids - the piece was created using the ancient lost-wax casting process.
The Art of the Process
The journey from clay to bronze is a meticulous one:
The Wax Model: A detailed wax version of the bear is created, capturing every texture and curve.
The Investment: This wax model is encased in a ceramic shell (the "investment").
The "Lost" Wax: The shell is heated until the wax melts and drains away, leaving a perfect negative cavity of the bear.
The Pour: Molten bronze is poured into the hollow shell. Once cooled, the ceramic is broken away to reveal the bronze sculpture within.
The result is a piece that feels both heavy and lighthearted - a whimsical tribute to the universal need for a good nap. Whether it's dreaming of seals or just enjoying the cool ground, this bear is the ultimate reminder to slow down and embrace the "lazy days."
