Back / Whispers on the Ice

Background

"Whispers on the Ice" captivates with its poignant depiction of two polar bears, gazing upwards with a shared sense of wonder and perhaps, longing. The larger bear, strikingly rendered in cracked, luminous white Raku, embodies the majestic beauty of the Arctic. Its surface, textured with a network of fissures, profoundly echoes the vast, fractured ice floes of its disappearing habitat. Clutched protectively at its side, the smaller, darker cub, with patches of lighter fur, also tilts its head towards an unseen spectacle - evoking the ethereal dance of the Aurora Borealis, a beacon of hope against the encroaching darkness.

The Raku firing process itself, characterized by its dramatic and unpredictable crackle glaze, serves as a powerful metaphor for the fragility of the polar bear's environment. The intense heat followed by rapid cooling and smoking creates unique, web-like patterns on the surface, visually linking the delicate balance of the firing to the precarious nature of the polar ice caps. Each crack narrates a story of tension and transformation, mirroring the environmental stresses faced by these magnificent creatures.

This sculpture is more than an homage; it is a resonant call to awareness, reminding us that the beauty we adore is as vulnerable and fleeting as the Raku's unique surface, urging us to protect the whispers on the ice before they fade forever.
